Calling Daniel Island a unique living experience is no idle boast. Once a plentiful foraging area for numerous coastal Indian tribes, the bountiful island was included in a royal land grant to Welsh nobleman Robert Daniell in 1698, when it was cultivated as a rice and indigo plantation. The plantation and island were named for Daniell, who would briefly serve as royal governor of South Carolina, and for many years it was referred to as Daniell's Island.
